Natalia Maroto, CEO of ITCM Solutions, experts in cybersecurity and computer engineering, explains how we can protect our companies – and ourselves – against cybercrime.
Every week, almost daily, we hear news about theft, blocking, and deception in the vast expanses of the internet.
Cyberattacks are on everyone’s lips, according to the newspaper El País, cybercrime reaches “unprecedented levels” with 90 million attacks per year costing 10.5 billion euros.
However, most people, until they are directly affected, do not act to prevent and protect themselves.
We prefer prevention than cure
As an exclusive agency of AXA, at Dylsi we offer Cyber Protection insurance to protect your business in the event of a cyberattack.
However, we share the firm belief that prevention is better than cure.
For this reason, we have asked the expert in cybersecurity and data protection, Natalia Maroto, owner of the company ITCM Solutions in Mallorca, to share with our clients some tips on how to protect themselves against a cyberattack.
And we don’t just need this protection at the company level, but also at the personal level, because in our private lives, we are almost as connected and digitized today as companies are.
The 10 tips to self-assess security within your company
“Every entrepreneur has the responsibility to protect the data entrusted to them by their customers and by which a company has against cyberattacks,” says Natalia Maroto.
What is a cyberattack?
“It is any unauthorized access to steal, expose, alter, disable or destroy data, which can lead to damage, even destroy businesses.” 60% of companies that suffer a cyberattack close in less than six months. The cybersecurity expert warns not to take this threat lightly, although she also sends a message of reassurance: “Both entrepreneurs and individuals can protect themselves and make it very difficult, if not impossible, for cybercriminals to access their data.”
To do this, he recommends asking yourself a series of questions that help assess the level of cybersecurity you have in your company.
- Do you know the most common cyberattacks?
Do you know how company data has been stolen? - When was the last time you carried out a simulation of stealing your data?
Have you checked if your backup is working? - Does your antivirus allow you to know, in the event of a cyberattack, how they have been able to access the data and what data they extracted?
- Do you have a protocol for the payment of your suppliers?
- How often do you discuss cybersecurity with your team?
- Do you design backups because of the importance of information for the continuity of your company?
Sometimes only the boss’s computer is protected, when in reality all the relevant information is located on the employees’ computers. - Do you have a plan for recovering your data?
- How often do you update applications on computers?
- Do you know the developer of each application installed on your company’s computers?
- Name the five key security policies you have in place for the transfer, storage, protection, access, and modification of data.
If you answer some of these questions in the negative, or have no idea what they’re talking about – it’s time to think about improving your company’s protection in the digital realm. “Each company should have a specific budget for cybersecurity. The budget will always correspond to the level of fragility of the customers, whose data must be protected,” explains Natalia Maroto.
To do this, it is important to know where the company stands: “You have to ask yourself, for example, what information I need to secure, how often, what will happen if I lose the data, if I can recover it from the backup.
With this, you have to be careful too, I always recommend having a backup system that does not depend on the human factor, and therefore human errors cannot occur, such as forgetting to make the copy at a given time.”
Protecting our families, our privacy
“On a personal level, the issue of cybersecurity is not as complex as in the company, although it is no less important to protect ourselves.
First, it is necessary to know the possibilities of manipulation, for example, in payment with the card or related to the same bank account,” explains the digital security consultant.
“And the second thing is, have a robust antivirus, and never install applications or downloads that can open a door for cybercriminals.”
Talking as a family as we use the internet allows us to take care of ourselves.
What would it mean to lose family photos and videos?
What if those photos are manipulated and published?
Awareness of these issues is the first step.
It is essential to sit down and reflect on the level, needs and form of protection with an expert consultant.
