Debunking Insurance Myths – Part 1
What You Think You Know (But Don’t)

Navigating the world of insurance can be confusing, especially for expats living in Spain. Misinformation, language barriers, and a lack of clarity around local regulations often lead to misunderstandings. Let us debunk some of the most common insurance myths in a two-part series, based on a recent article about Dylsi in Celebrity Mallorca and designed to help you make smarter, more informed decisions.

“Insurance is too expensive”

Many believe that insurance is always a costly investment. While some policies can be pricey, there are various options tailored to different budgets and needs. The key is understanding your coverage options and finding a plan that balances affordability with protection. In many cases, the cost of an unexpected event such as a car accident, medical emergency, or property damage far outweighs the price of a policy.

“It’s better to save money than pay for insurance”

Some individuals think that setting aside money in savings is a better strategy than purchasing insurance. While having an emergency fund is crucial, it’s rarely enough to cover major financial losses. A medical emergency, legal issue, or home damage could wipe out years of savings in an instant. Insurance provides a safety net, ensuring that you’re financially protected in times of crisis.

“Health insurance is only for the sick”

Many people believe that health insurance is unnecessary if they are young and healthy. However, health insurance isn’t just about covering existing conditions, it also provides access to preventive care, early diagnosis, and financial protection against unexpected medical emergencies. Private health insurance, for example, can offer shorter waiting times and access to specialists that public healthcare may not cover as quickly. In Spain, many of these specialists also provide services in your language, making the process even smoother.

“Insurance policies are full of hidden clauses”

There’s a common assumption that insurance policies contain tricky clauses designed to avoid payouts. While policies must be carefully reviewed, Spain has made significant progress in ensuring greater transparency. Professional insurance mediator associations have pushed for clearer policy wording, and Spanish law mandates that limiting clauses (exclusions) be highlighted in bold. Since some contracts remain complex even for industry professionals, it’s crucial to seek guidance from a trusted insurance agent or broker just as you would consult a lawyer for an important contract.

“Insurance doesn’t cover natural disasters or major crises”

One of the biggest misconceptions is that insurance won’t cover large-scale disasters. In Spain, a unique institution called the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (CCS) provides coverage for extraordinary risks that standard policies may exclude. The CCS covers damage from natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and extreme storms, as well as damage caused by civil unrest or terrorism. This level of protection is uncommon in most countries, making Spain’s insurance landscape particularly robust.
