If you have ever tried to photograph a newborn, you know that it’s no easy task. Babies have their own rhythm; you can’t ask them to change their pose, smile or keep still.
To capture that perfect moment, you need a professional with plenty of experience and expertise, such as Enrique Medrano, president of the Association of Professional Photographers of the Balearic Islands (AFPB). “Sometimes we wait half an hour or longer until a baby has settled down, had a feed or fallen asleep, so that we can position them in the pose the parents have chosen for the photo,” explains the photographer.
Every session requires patience, serenity and a great deal of care. At Tonos’ studio, everything is designed to ensure that parents and babies feel at ease.
As well as the ideal premises with perfect temperature and lighting, the room offers everything families need: from nappies to the facility to warm a bottle whilst waiting calmly for the baby to relax or fall asleep. Reme and Enrique know how to convey the sense of serenity that new parents often need, creating a relaxed atmosphere where everything happens quite naturally.
Creativity is also one of the hallmarks of Tonos Fotógrafos. Every shoot is individually tailored, with a variety of props and backdrops that make every picture unique. Sometimes the photos reflect the parents’ hobbies or passions: a baby resting in a motorbike helmet, surrounded by flowers, or in a lovingly prepared little nest. Although newborn photography is one of their specialities, Tonos Fotógrafos support many families throughout their entire life journey.
Starting points are usually maternity shoots, where expectant mothers can choose between different styles and backdrops – with or without their partner or even their pets.
Next: the newborn phase, followed by photographic coverage of the first 12 months of life. Over the years, family photo shoots, First Communions and the traditional Christmas photos. Every year, the studio in Palma is transformed with new festive decorations and Christmas backdrops designed especially for these photo shoots.
More often than not, the relationship with families lasts for decades. “We have clients whose newborn photos we took, whom we followed through their childhood, whose first communion we photographed … and who now ask us to document their wedding and later take photos of their own babies,” say Reme and Enrique. “It’s a close, almost family-like relationship.”
Beyond the studio
The studio in Palma is the usual venue for children’s and maternity photoshoots, but the Tonos team will also travel wherever the client wishes. They have photographed weddings and events in various locations, including outside Spain, such as in Paris or Venice. This proves that their work knows no bounds when it comes to capturing important moments.
Enrique Medrano is not only a qualified photography instructor but has also received numerous awards over the years, including the title of ‘World’s Best Wedding Photographer’ (awarded by World Elite Photographers). “Continuous professional development is extremely important to me; I’m constantly learning,” he explains, adding that he has even studied dog psychology so that he can carry out family shoots with pets. For Tonos Fotógrafos, photography is an authentic reflection of life and the people -and pets- who are part of it.
