A story of purpose

Mercedes, born and raised in Mallorca by English parents, has always loved both animals and the cosy atmosphere of candles. However, during the pandemic, she heard something that would change her life: an interview with an American veterinarian who warned about the risks of candles made from paraffin, a petroleum derivative. According to experts, the fumes given off by these candles and many aromatic oils can cause organ failure in pets exposed to them for long periods. In addition, they can also affect people, causing headaches, dizziness, and even exposing us to carcinogenic substances.
This information profoundly impacted Mercedes, who loved to light candles in her home. ‘I started researching and discovered that many common candles are harmful to animals and humans,’ she explains. This finding gave her a purpose: to create natural, non-toxic and safe candles.
From The Island Candles is born
In 2022, Mercedes launched From The Island Candles, an artisan brand that produces candles with 100% soy wax and high-quality aromatic oils sourced from Europe. The candles are handmade in her studio in Calvià and are entirely safe for humans and animals. They are also vegan and animal cruelty-free, a commitment reflected in every aspect of the brand.
The company’s logo, an image of her little dog Biscuit’s ears, is a tribute to her faithful companion, who even participated in the ‘testing’ of the products. Inspired by Biscuit, Mercedes has also created a line of animal care products, such as a balm for dogs’ and cats’ paws, which is ideal for protecting them in cold or dry climates.
Natural paraffin-free candles
From The Island Candles offers a wide range of scented candles designed for any occasion. Currently, their Christmas collection is proving to be a great success, with scents such as Christmas Spices, Santa’s Cookies, Gingerbread and Salted Caramel, perfect for creating a cosy atmosphere for the festive season. Mercedes not only provides candles with unique scents, but some also have special effects. For example, the fragrance “Summer rain”, with a calming effect, is ideal for helping pets relax during stressful moments, such as the New Year’s Eve fireworks. In addition, the brand offers scents that evoke wild gardens, limoncello, fresh coconut and many more, so you can always find something to suit your taste. One of the bestsellers is the Anti-Mosquito candles, free of paraffin and citronella and therefore safe for humans and pets – yet very efficient in combating annoying mosquitoes on summer nights.
Affordable quality
From the very beginning, Mercedes wanted her candles to be affordable. ‘I want people to be able to afford candles without them perceiving them as a luxury,’ she says. This approach makes From The Island Candles an attractive brand and a responsible and ethical choice for those looking for quality products without harming the environment or their wallet.
The Island Candles are available online through their website and in different local shops in the southwest of Mallorca, such as Cala Mayor, Santa Catalina and Porto Colom. Mercedes is also present this month at the Christmas Market in Son Amar, where she sells her products personally every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the 22nd of December, from 3 pm to 9 pm (Fridays from 4 pm). It is a perfect opportunity to get to know her, discover her collection and support local commerce.
