Our recent <strong>webinar with Natalia<\/strong> made it clear to us that <strong>we are all exposed<\/strong>, from SMEs to families with children and connected devices. Here is a summary of practical advice, valuable resources, and answers to the most frequently asked questions in the webinar Dylsi organised.  <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Why do we think that cybersecurity is not for us?<\/h2>\n<h4>&#8220;SMEs and families are the easiest targets for cybercriminals.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014 <em>Natalia Maroto<\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Large corporations<\/strong> have protocols, IT teams and legal obligations, such as <strong>reporting incidents to the AEPD<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aepd.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spanish Data Protection Agency<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>On the other hand, <strong>SMEs and individuals tend to<\/strong> have <strong>less protection and more vulnerabilities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A hacker <strong>can break into a family holding company through a child&#8217;s tablet by watching videos on YouTube<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Social media give away too much information about where we are and <strong>when we are not at home<\/strong>. Avoid sharing your whole life in real time! <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How do cybercriminals use our data?<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Identity theft<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2192 Sending personal documents by email or WhatsApp facilitates identity theft.<br \/>\n\u2192 They can take out loans, open accounts, or make purchases on your behalf.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Financial fraud<\/strong><br \/>\nfraud\u2192 From using credit cards to accessing bank accounts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extortion or blackmail<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2192 Threats to publish compromising photos or information.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Information theft or malware<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2192 Device lock-down to demand a ransom (ransomware).<br \/>\n\u2192 Silent theft of data for resale: customers, suppliers, algorithms&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Basic (and affordable) tools to protect ourselves<\/h2>\n<h4>&#8220;For \u20ac20 a year you can start protecting your company and family. Who would think that&#8217;s not worth paying for?&#8221;<br \/>\n\u2014 <em>Natalia Maroto<\/em><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Password manager<\/strong>: avoid always using the same passwords. Don&#8217;t share them. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Two-factor authentication (2FA):<\/strong> many apps already include it, enable it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Updatea antivirus<\/strong>: there are more than enough free versions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Backup copies in the cloud<\/strong>: also for your family photos.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Free training<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.incibe.es\/incibe\/formacion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Courses of the National Institute for Cybersecurity (INCIBE)<\/a> for families, employees and companies.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/incibe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INCIBE&#8217;s Instagram<\/a> for up-to-date tips.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid public WiFi networks<\/strong>: they are open doors to data theft.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Extra tips for SMEs and the self-employed<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Digital certificate for e-mail<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2192 Ensure your invoices and quotes arrive safely.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personalised<\/strong><br \/>\ntraining\u2192 <a href=\"https:\/\/itcm.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITCM Solutions<\/a> offers courses adapted to every company.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check website security<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2192 Does it have the sign of a padlock? Does the URL start with &#8220;https&#8221;? If so, it&#8217;s secure.  <\/li>\n<li><strong>Verifiy attachments<\/strong> before opening them:<br \/>\n\u2192 Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.virustotal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VirusTotal<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/haveibeenpwned.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Have I Been Pwned<\/a> to check if an email is suspicious.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don&#8217;t enter your data with ransom online surveys<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2192 Once you have given it away, <strong>there is no going back<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strong passwords<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2192 At least <strong>14-19 characters<\/strong>, with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols.<br \/>\n\u2192 Avoid typical characters such as &#8216;@&#8217; or &#8216;!&#8217;, which are now familiar and easy to guess.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What should I do if I am hacked? Steps to follow <\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Go offline<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2192 Put your mobile phone in aeroplane mode and disconnect your computer from the network and the Internet.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Call a data<\/strong><br \/>\nprotection expert\u2192It is not necessarily an IT specialist who is a data protection expert. You can also rely on an external specialised company such as <a href=\"https:\/\/itcm.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ITCM Solutions<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Identify affected<\/strong><br \/>\n data\u2192 Is there data on customers, suppliers or sensitive information?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inform those affected<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2192 It is your obligation if you handle personal data.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Notify the AEPD (if in Spain)<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2192 Depending on the type of company, you may have a limited period of time to do so.<br \/>\n\u2192 Consult <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aepd.es\/derechos-y-deberes\/cumple-tus-deberes\/medidas-de-cumplimiento\/brechas-de-datos-personales-notificacion#:~:text=El%20art%C3%ADculo%2033%20del%20RGPD,y%20libertades%20de%20las%20personas.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the AEPD&#8217;s guide on data breaches<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Document everything that has happened<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Transparency and teamwork<\/h2>\n<h4>&#8220;Cybercriminals use psychology.
